France: D-Day in Normandy. Drivers should expect traffic jams, diversions and road closures

From 4 to 7 June 2026, Normandy will host events marking the 82nd anniversary of the Allied landings. For carriers, this means a risk of heavy traffic jams, local road closures and parking problems in the Calvados area, especially on the N13 route and roads leading to the coast.

From 4 to 7 June 2026, north-western France will become the centre of commemorations marking the 82nd anniversary of the Normandy landings, known as D-Day. The anniversary events will result in significant disruptions on key transit corridors in the Calvados region, which are important for international transport. Although no formal driving bans for heavy goods vehicles have been introduced, heavy traffic jams, local road closures and restrictions on passing through towns and villages hosting the ceremonies are expected.

❌ Key event locations
The commemorations will include, among others:
▫️Caen
▫️Bayeux
▫️Arromanches-les-Bains
▫️Ouistreham, Sword Beach
▫️Langrune-sur-Mer
▫️Bénouville, Pegasus Bridge

Additional events are also planned in:
▫️Sainte-Mère-Église
▫️Carentan-les-Marais

❌ Main road disruptions
The most heavily congested sections are expected to be:
▫️Caen - Bayeux, N13 road, with an additional street race planned in Caen
▫️Bayeux - Arromanches
▫️Caen - Ouistreham
▫️the coastline between Courseulles-sur-Mer, Langrune-sur-Mer and Luc-sur-Mer
▫️the area around Colleville-sur-Mer, the American war cemetery

In these areas, drivers should expect longer journey times, diversions and temporary closures of local roads.

In practice, this means possible delays in transport operations and the need to plan routes and stops in advance. The situation may be particularly difficult in the Calvados area, where increased tourist traffic and the organisation of events will significantly reduce traffic flow. Another challenge will be the limited availability of parking and accommodation, which may make it more difficult for drivers to take their weekly rest near the event locations. Drivers travelling through Normandy during this period should take into account possible diversions and local road closures, longer journey times in the N13 and coastal areas, and the need to reserve stops in advance, preferably further away from Calvados.

D-Day commemorations generate increased traffic in the region every year. However, this year’s 82nd anniversary may further intensify the scale of disruptions, directly affecting transport flow in one of France’s key transit regions.
