Slovakia closes a section of the D3 motorway and the Považský Chlmec tunnel. Drivers face diversions

The Slovak D3 motorway in the Žilina area will be temporarily closed due to maintenance work in the Považský Chlmec tunnel. Drivers, including carriers travelling on the Žilina Strážov – Žilina Brodno route, should expect diversions through the city and longer journey times.

Slovak authorities have announced a full closure of the D3 motorway on the Žilina (Strážov) – Žilina (Brodno) section, including the Považský Chlmec tunnel. The reason is regular maintenance work in the tunnel. The first closure will start on Thursday, 28 May 2026 at 19:00 and will last until Friday, 29 May at 06:00. The tunnel will then be fully closed again from Friday, 29 May at 19:00 until Sunday, 31 May at 16:00.

Additional restrictions are also planned from 1 to 6 June. During this period, the left tunnel tube in the direction from Čadca to Bratislava will be closed every night. The restrictions will apply daily from 19:00 to 06:00 the following morning.

❌ Diversions have been designated through the city of Žilina:
• from the Strážov side, traffic will be redirected via road I/18,
• from the Brodno side, the diversion will run via road I/11.

Drivers should expect longer journey times, especially in the evening and at night. Slovak authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution and follow temporary road signs.
