Hungary opens a new tolled section of the M6 motorway. Trucks can use it free of charge for now

Hungary has formally incorporated a 2.5-kilometre section of the M6 motorway near the Croatian border into the HU-GO toll system. However, the operator has simultaneously suspended toll collection, meaning that vehicles with a gross vehicle weight exceeding 3.5 tonnes can currently use the route without a route ticket or an OBU device.
As of 1 July 2026, the short section of the M6 motorway between Ivándárda and the Croatian border has been formally added to Hungary’s electronic road toll system, HU-GO. At the same time, the system operator announced a partial suspension of toll collection on this section. As a result, vehicles with a GVW exceeding 3.5 tonnes may currently travel on this stretch without declaring the journey and without incurring toll charges.
The change affects approximately 2.5 kilometres of the M6 motorway leading to the Croatian border. Under amendments to Hungarian legislation, this section became subject to the distance-based tolling system for heavy goods vehicles on 1 July. Despite the entry into force of the new regulations, the HU-GO operator announced a temporary suspension of toll collection on this stretch. This means that, until further notice, transport operators are not required to pay for journeys on this section either through a route ticket or via on-board units (OBUs) used for automatic toll calculation.
Information about the suspension has also been communicated to partners involved in operating the toll collection system in order to ensure correct journey accounting during the transitional period. The change results from the inclusion of the Ivándárda–state border section in the HU-GO road network pursuant to Decree 25/2013 (V.31.) governing toll rates and the roads subject to toll payment obligations.
E-vignettes remain mandatory
The operator emphasises that the suspension applies exclusively to the electronic toll system for vehicles with a GVW exceeding 3.5 tonnes. The rules governing the e-vignette system remain unchanged. The M6 section between Ivándárda and the state border became subject to the e-vignette requirement on 1 January 2026 under Decree 45/2020 (XI.28.). Drivers of vehicles using the e-vignette system must therefore continue to hold a valid travel entitlement. For the time being, the operator has not announced when toll collection within the HU-GO system will resume. However, it has stated that all users will be informed well in advance about the reinstatement of toll payment obligations through official communication channels and notices published within the system.
