Salzburg prepares the largest package of bans near the A10. Drivers must be careful

The authorities in Salzburg are introducing temporary bans on leaving the A10 Tauernautobahn motorway, as well as restrictions on local and regional roads in its surroundings. The new rules are intended to block transit traffic trying to bypass congestion through towns in the region. They will apply, among other dates, during Pentecost, on 30 May and during the peak summer travel period.

The government of the federal state of Salzburg has published a series of regulations introducing temporary traffic restrictions on the A10 Tauernautobahn motorway and on local and regional roads in its surroundings. The aim is to limit transit traffic that avoids traffic jams by driving through towns in the region.

The restrictions will apply:
❌ from 22 to 25 May 2026, Pentecost,
❌ on 30 May 2026, in connection with a demonstration at the Brenner Pass and the possible diversion of traffic to the A10,
❌ from 11 July to 13 September 2026, during the summer holidays.

Exit bans from the A10 Tauernautobahn

The bans will cover numerous exits from the A10 motorway leading to local and regional roads in the Salzburg region.

● Puch-Urstein, Exit 11, in both directions, Urstein Süd and Nord roundabouts
● Hallein, Exit 16, onto the L107, roundabout
● Kuchl, Exit 22, onto the B159
● Golling-Abtenau, Exit 28, onto the B159
● Werfen, Exit 43, onto the B159
● Pfarrwerfen-Werfen, Exit 44, onto the L229
● Pongau, Exit 46, onto the L276
● Lammertal-Hüttau, Exit 56, onto the B166
● Eben im Pongau, Exit 60, onto the B99
● Altenmarkt, Exit 63, onto the B320
● Flachau, Exit 66, onto the L230
● Flachauwinkl, Exit 74, onto municipal roads
● Zederhaus, onto the L212

In addition, exiting from the turning lanes at the Landzeit service areas, Gasthof Nord and Süd, onto municipal roads in the Gasthofsiedlung and Gewerbegebiet Gasthof Süd areas will also be prohibited.

Restrictions also outside the motorway

Separate regulations also cover a number of regional and local roads in the municipalities of Anif, Elsbethen, Grödig, Großgmain and Wals-Siezenheim.

❌ In the municipality of Anif, restrictions will apply, among others, on:
● B159 Salzachtal Straße,
● Ahornstraße,
● Neu-Anifer Straße,
● Kirchenstraße,
● Schloss-Lasseregg-Straße.

→ In Elsbethen, the ban will cover the L105 Halleiner Landesstraße.

❌ In Grödig, restrictions have been introduced, among others, on:
● Neue-Heimat-Straße,
● Moosstraße,
● Gutrathbergweg,
● L104 Grödiger Landesstraße,
● L237 Glanegger Landesstraße,
● B160 Berchtesgadener Straße at the Hangendenstein border crossing.

❌ In Großgmain, the bans apply to:
● L237 Glanegger Landesstraße,
● L114 Großgmainer Landesstraße at the border.

❌ In Wals-Siezenheim, the restrictions cover:
● Viehhauser Straße,
● Lagerhausstraße,
● Edelweißstraße,
● Schulstraße,
● Grödigerweg,
● Josef-Hauthaler-Straße,
● B1 Wiener Straße.

Exception only for destination traffic

The following are exempt from the restrictions:
● destination traffic to Austria,
● local traffic specified in the regulations,
● cyclists.

Austrian regulations stress that “destination traffic” means an actual travel destination within Austrian territory. Simply bypassing a traffic jam will not be considered a valid reason to leave the motorway. The bans will be enforced using the “no entry” sign and supplementary signs reading: “ausgenommen Zielverkehr Österreich”.

Salzburg tightens its anti-transit system

The new rules are among the largest packages of anti-bypass restrictions introduced in the Salzburg region in recent years. In practice, they mean an almost complete closure of local roads as an alternative to the congested A10 during holiday weekends, protests on the Brenner route and the peak summer tourist season.
