A10 in Austria with major disruptions. Transit trucks will not be allowed to use local detours

From 18 to 23 May 2026, carriers travelling through Austria must expect serious problems on the A10 Tauern Autobahn. The closure of the carriageway towards Salzburg and additional restrictions for trucks over 7.5 tonnes mean that transit traffic will have to bypass this section using longer alternative routes.

The disruptions affect one of the most important road corridors through the Alps. According to ASFINAG, from Monday, 18 May, at 13:00, until Saturday, 23 May, at 06:00, the A10 carriageway towards Salzburg will be completely closed between the Pongau junction and Pass Lueg. During this period, passenger cars and some other vehicles will be diverted onto the B159 road.

Heavy goods transport will face a much more difficult situation. For vehicles with a permissible gross weight of over 7.5 tonnes, Austria will introduce an additional driving ban on the northern section of the A10 between the Villach and Salzburg junctions. The restriction will apply from 18 May at 11:00 until 23 May at 04:00. Only local and regional traffic is expected to be exempt. In practice, this means that trucks travelling in transit will not be allowed to use local detours through the Salzburg region. Carriers carrying out international transport will have to plan their journeys in advance and choose alternative routes, including the Felbertauern road B108, the Pyhrn motorway A9 or the Brenner motorway A13.

ASFINAG warns that due to the importance of the A10 for international traffic, congestion may occur not only near the closed section but also on alternative routes. The disruptions may particularly affect transport heading to Italy and shipments between southern Germany and the Balkans. The closure is caused by repair works in the Brentenberg tunnel. The tunnel was damaged in January 2026 after a truck fire. The damage affected around 120 metres of the tunnel as well as technical infrastructure and safety systems. The works include the replacement of fire protection systems, ventilation, monitoring, LED lighting and evacuation equipment. The motorway operator announces that drivers should also expect further restrictions on the A10 at the end of May and in June, until the tunnel repairs are fully completed.
