Germany: Night-time closures of the A1 near Cologne
On the A1 motorway in the Cologne area, full night-time closures have been scheduled due to maintenance work in the Köln-Lövenich tunnel. From 25 to 28 August 2026, traffic will be temporarily halted in the directions of Koblenz and Dortmund, while long-distance traffic will be diverted via the A3 and A4.
The disruptions are scheduled between 21:00 and 05:00.
➡️ On the night of 25-26 August and the night of 27-28 August, the A1 will be completely closed in the direction of Koblenz. The motorway entrances from the Köln-Bocklemünd and Köln-Lövenich interchanges will also be closed.
➡️ On the night of 26-27 August and the night of 27-28 August, the direction of Dortmund will be closed. The connecting ramp from the A4 to the A1 towards Dortmund at the Köln-West interchange will also be closed.
Signed diversion routes will be marked with a red dot. Autobahn GmbH recommends that long-distance traffic bypass the closed section more widely and use routes via the A3 and A4. The closures are necessary due to maintenance work being carried out by Autobahn GmbH Rheinland on the Lövenich noise protection enclosure. The works have been scheduled at night to minimise their impact on daytime traffic.
For heavy goods transport, the recommendation concerning long-distance traffic is particularly important. Travelling through the Cologne area at night will require taking the diversion into account, as well as the possibility of increased traffic volumes on alternative routes. It is therefore advisable to plan the journey well in advance, especially for transit traffic through western Germany.
