Romania: 17 km section of the A10 Sebeș–Turda motorway closed. Traffic diverted to DN1
Serious disruptions have occurred on one of Romania’s important transit routes. Due to the worsening ground stability problems and damage to the pavement and road embankment, a 17-kilometre section of the A10 Sebeș - Turda motorway in the direction of Turda has been closed.
The problem intensified near the 66th kilometre of the A10 motorway, where deterioration of the pavement and the ground beneath the road structure was identified. The damage affected the carriageway leading towards Turda – initially, vehicles were able to use one lane, but the deteriorating condition of the infrastructure forced the complete closure of this section.
Since 7 July, the A10 motorway section between km 52+800 and km 70+000 in the direction of Turda has been closed to traffic. The diversion route runs via the Unirea interchange, then along the DN1 national road, with traffic rejoining the motorway near the Turda interchange.
The Cluj Regional Directorate of Roads and Bridges (DRDP Cluj) has launched urgent safety works. The works include stabilisation of the damaged area, repairs to the road structure and drainage measures aimed at preventing further deterioration of the problem.
The decision to close the entire 17-kilometre section was criticised by Horațiu Cosma, Secretary of State at Romania’s Ministry of Transport. In his opinion, a temporary solution could have been implemented by routing traffic onto the opposite carriageway of the motorway and limiting the closure to around 2.5 km of the most severely damaged section.
According to his proposal, traffic would have been carried in both directions on one carriageway of the A10, using existing technical solutions in the central reservation. This would have reduced the need to divert vehicles onto the DN1 national road.
The problematic section of the A10 Sebeș - Turda motorway has been affected by ground stability issues for a long time. Repair and reinforcement works had also previously been carried out in the area of kilometre 66.
